The Somerset Catchment Beaver Advisory Group is currently being formally established but hopes to become fully operational over the winter of 2024/25. The group aims to support communities living in the Somerset Catchment Partnership area – including the Levels and Moors – to capitalise on the positives of renewed co-existence with free-living beavers and offer advice on how to avoid or mitigate potential challenges while simultaneously always maintaining high levels of beaver welfare.
The BAG’s Steering Group comprises organisations that have a broad range of specialisms and the ability to make or influence strategic and policy decisions that affect local communities and community planning. However, we want to work with wider stakeholders and encourage two-way dialogue and learning with everyone who has either a personal or professional interest in beavers in Somerset. This can be done by either contacting us directly or attending our Partnership Forum events. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Respect the open water environment and its ecological importance. Check your equipment is clean, dry and free from invasive plants or animals when visiting new sites. We would recommend using the biosecurity procedures outlined in the Check Clean Dry campaign. Be mindful of the impact your activities might have on the aquatic ecosystem and aim to work in a way that preserves the natural balance, protecting these vital water sources and their inhabitants for future generations.
This website has been designed to support communities and land managers living alongside beavers in Britain. It is also a useful source of relevant information on Beaver Advisory/Management Groups in river catchments where wild beavers are becoming established. It has been designed by Devon Wildlife Trust and Beaver Trust.
